Ae dil ki mushkil!

Two movies back to back, first Shivaay on Friday then Ae Dil Hai Mushkil on Saturday. I guess Ae Dil was one of the most awaited films of the year for many reasons, A because of our very own director Karan Johar who has given us some blockbusters in past, B because of the mix of the star studded cast, C for all the special appearances in the film and D finally for all the controversies revolving before its release. After all the settlement, it finally released on the promised date.

With heavy expectations and excitement I went to watch the film, and was surely let down by it. Film opens up with Ayan Sanger (Ranbir Kapoor), private jet type rich boy, aspiring singer but pursuing MBA. Then comes Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) a rich girl, who has many feathers on her hat and is over chirpy. First half of the film covers Ayan and Alizeh’s friendship moments from breaking up with their current partners Lisa (Lisa Haydon) and Dr.Faisal (Imran Abbas) respectively to Breakup song Dances to Holidaying across Paris in filmy style to coming face to face with Alizeh’s love and ex-boyfriend Dj Ali (Fawad Khan). Dj Ali manages to convince Alizeh to get married to her and that’s the moment Ayan realizes he is passionately in love with Alizeh.

Second half of the film goes straight down and gets almost unbearable, with Ash in the role of Saba the Shaayra coming in the movie looks totally forced. With Ayan struggling to forget Alizeh and romancing Saba to Alizeh being insecure about his spouse Dj Ali, the film’s storyline goes for a toss and to top it off we have Shahrukh Khan as Tahir, Saba’s ex husband stating some heavy duty Shaayri which makes no sense.

The passion leads to making Ayan one of the most popular singers over the years. Alizeh makes a comeback in Ayan’s life, she is already in the last stage of the cancer. The film ends with Ayan completing his interview and singing two lines from the song where his musical journey began.”Channa Mereya”. I guess that’s the only scene that touched my heart.

I think music is the soul of the film. Pritam has composed some outstanding songs and won hearts worldwide. Channa Mereya is my favourite song, not just for the music and lyrics but also for the fact the way its shot and portrayed in the movie.

The costumes of Ranbir Kapoor have been taken care by Anaita Shroff Adajania. Manish Malhotra handles the two leading ladies and Samidha Wangnoo has done costumes for Fawad Khan and the  rest of the secondary cast. Being a very urban and current timeline film, costumes are very relatable and of course designer. If it Karan Johar’s film everything has to be up to the notch.

Lets start from Ayan. He as a character is extremely strong in itself; he manages to steal the show in the film, with all his dance moves to fun and innocent gestures to being extremely passionate about his love to being a sexy mature singer. The transition of his looks was pretty clearly visible. Initially he sports a very clean look with no beard. He is seen wearing sweatshirts, jeans and zipper jackets, high top sneakers, trenches. His sunglasses were also pretty cool.

Love the part when they try to relive Rishi Kapoor’s song from Chandni and Ayan is wearing this Chunky heavy knitted sweater like his father. Song cutiepie has the wedding portion covered, in which Ayan is seen in super high and frustrated mood, which is seen through his dressing as well.

His first look in white chikan kurta and black sunglasses and the dupatta on his head, was funny and relatable when you are drunk.

Then eventually we see him grow as a person and a singer, he shifts to checkered and tartan shirts, long cardigans and scarves and hand accessories, giving the Rockstar vibe. After really long saw a hero sport turtleneck sweater in the film, he wore black and oatmeal color, he looked sexy in the latter one.

Alizeh is a young Indian muslim girl next door, so again the Indie vibe is quite clear with she wearing Kurtas with silver jewelry in the film! She had a mix of wardrobe from bling tops to tunics paired with cool grunge jackets and boots to her very ordinary nightsuit. Her looks in the film looked pretty ordinary except for her wedding scene.

Although her wedding outfit created too much hype and controversy but my favourite outfit was the white and black velvet sharara she is wearing. During the last bit of the film when she is ill, her wardrobe shifts to colorful knitted sweaters and printed leggings with a Beenie but continues to wear her silver jewelry.

Saba being an older and mature woman is majorly seen in trenches, from different colors to blingy to textures, not much of experimentation in her looks at all. Also felt that her outfits had too much bling and were loud crying for attention. Her hair was perfectly waved to next level and makeup was flawless, making it look all the more artificial.

Dj Ali has his grunge vibe on with tattoos and beard and messy clothing, which ticked right for his character. Miss Lisa was seen in all the most sexy and outrageous clothes, which she pulled it off well.

There was so much happening in one short film that I personally couldn’t connect to any characters except for some fun moments of Ayan. I wish there was much more to the script and the bond of friendship between Ayan and Alizeh was not so twisted and gimmicky. The film plot was like a bhel of Tamasha, Rockstar, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Wake up Sid. But if you are a Ranbir fan or have grown up watching Kjo movies then maybe you can manage to sit through the film.

Happy Diwali and A Happy New Year guys soon will be posting how I spent my Diwali day.

Love,

Cine Closet.
