One Man Army ........ AKIRA!!
After Ghajini and Holiday, A R Murugadoss makes a come back
with an action thriller film Akira. Since Feminism and Women Empowerment are
current hot topics in our country, we see Akira (remake of a hit Tamil film
Mouna Guru 2011) as the Hero of the film, which definitely fails to convey the
message of Self Defense for all the girls out there.
As a young teenage small town girl she has a very supportive
father who gives her an option between Bharatnatyam and Karate, Of course our
Akira chooses the latter to become punch packed Heroine eventually. Don’t want
to go much in details and give major spoilers, after 14 years of all her
dramatic life in small town of Jodhpur, she gets a chance to go to Mumbai with
her mother. Cut to we see her in Mumbai trying to get a hang of the College
Bullying life. She is almost adapting to
this whole situation when a parallel on going story of corrupt cops merges with
Akira in a very Lame way.
The role of ACP Rane (almost like a gang leader of the
group) is played by Anurag Kashyap. Personally I felt even though the name
being Akira of the film the major focus was on Rane who actually added sense to
his crazy cop character. Thrilled to see Konkana Sen Sharma as a dedicated
pregnant cop in the film (Her character is inspired by Francis McDormand’s
character in Fargo) But it doesn’t take much time for the excitement graph to
go down.
Sakshi Mehra does costumes for Sonakshi Sinha and Konkana
Sen Sharma in the film. Megha Tandon handles the rest of the cast.
In our Bollywood movies why do we have to always relate to
an extremely clichéd look?? Just because the girl is from Rajasthan it is
mandatory to see the actor in clothes, which almost look like, are picked from
Pushkar Mela. Sonakshi is seen wearing Block Print Cotton Kurtas mirror
embellished and handicraft bandis or sleeveless waistcoats in contrasting colors.
She is only seen in Leggings in the whole film probably they were comfortable
for all her dhoom dhadaka sequence. And do I even need to mention she wore mojris
(again pushkar mela souvenier), which eventually switches to strappy flats. The
classic handicraft patchwork jhola added more to the look. Wearing that big chunk
silver pendant necklace, 5 to 6 rings, mix of bracelets and dark kohl eyes
totally look washed out on screen.
The costumes somehow give character to the lead Akira but
come on we have seen plenty of actresses in the same "I love handicrafts" looks
all the time and failed to leave any mark. Ps-don’t you think the idea of heavy grunge in this promotional
song Raj rajke reminds you of Anushka Sharma’s song Chil Gaye naine from Nh10.
Co-incidentally both share the theme of women-centric films. What say??
The continuity and aging bit of the costumes goes well in
the movie with all the characters especially in the second half of the film
when we see Akira in mental asylum for weeks and the final combat climax scene.
I wish this woman centric film could actually convey the
message of Strong and Powerful women. I cant say I loved the movie but all in
all great attempt by Sonakshi Sinha and Anurag Kashyap, would like to see him
more in films.
