The King of Romance.

This week has been a little hectic juggling between my styling work, my mom going crazy with all the mandatory cleaning in the house and last but not the least my blog work. In all this chaos my saavn app doesn’t fail to send me updates on what’s new with their latest playlists and one such pop up was on Tuesday “Remembering Yash Chopra on his birthday! They curated a playlist of songs from best of his movies. Not only his films were a hit among the masses but also his music was expressive.

The Legend- Yash Chopra.

The king of Romance hailing from a small town of Jalandhar in Punjab surely made an impact on the Indian Cinema. His vision was beyond what you and me could actually imagine, but he made sure he translated his concept well through his films. His first film came out in 1959 and has made films across 5 decades, wow that’s like a really long time, right? He had given us classics like Deewar, Kabhi Kabhi, SilSila, Daag to name a few.

When our heroines and directors were going crazy over those big bouffants, Chokers, hoops, winged liners, wide legged pants and fake lashes in the 70’s and 80’s, he presented his women in the films with simplicity. The 90’s were the best to witness this trend! It was a breather for the women who took so much of an effort and pain for getting ready just like our Bollywood divas. His dreamy snow clad sari dressed up sequences in the films was a sure shot hit among the masses, almost like his patent style!

The Sari and Snow Combination

He created 90’s as the Era of Realism in Bollywood. The women could actually get over the barriers and just be themselves. We actually got to witness the girl next door, who wakes up without makeup on; her hair is not perfectly blow-dried every single time and also no surgery face! Wow, I wish I was not a kid that time. He always had a vision in white for his actresses, according to him white was the color that beautified women’s features the most. He changed the perception of Indians who earlier chose white for mourning and widows.

Those white Saris, Suits or just and Off- Shoulder top he made sure he had his diva dressed up in white in the film.

In 90’s he gave us Lamhe (1991) starring Sridevi and Anil Kapoor, one of the most offbeat films during that phase of time, which definitely couldn’t do well with a very conservative audiences in India. Sridevi not only looked graceful in those Rajasthani Ghagras but also in the western clothing she adorns later and not to miss that super hit song “morni” from the film. Simple dresses, tops and jeans or a suit, with bare makeup, not the perfect hair definitely gave us an image of a real girl sans surgeries.

Darr came out in 1993, which was a super hit among the masses starring Sunny Deol, Juhi Chawla and SRK as our villain. I think Juhi Chawla had been one of the prettiest actresses in the Bollywood. Yash Chopra made sure we got a glimpse of her in white of course. Guys if you’ll haven’t seen the movie, trust me she looked flawless in the film without that cakey makeup or those overdone hairdos. She let her curls down and just is herself.

In 1995 his son made a debut with his film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, we definitely saw from where the inspiration came! Aditya Chopra definitely took vision from his father and put forward such a simple story of two lovers in the dreamiest way. All we girls wanted a Raj for ourselves! He made sure Kajol looked raw and beautiful with her simplicity and that definitely translated well, with simplest Suits or outfits she wore and no makeup she gave us some major style statements in the film that not only made Raj fall for her but all girls get those style in their closets.

After a gap of 5 years Yash Chopra gave us Dil toh Pagal Hai, I guess again a very simple well-presented Love triangle saga. With Madhuri and Karisma having two distinct looks in the films, I couldn’t take my eyes off the either of them. Love Love Love Madhuri’s Pastel Colored and not to forget white Suits, Saris and Lehengas. Simple, without those gotas and embroideries, what a relief! Karisma was seen in a little more modern avatar in those simple short dresses or Pants and pastel georgette Shirts which looked all the more pretty on her petite frame. I felt at once even Shahrukh Khan got confused, that which beauty should he choose.

Currently we are in an era of Plastic surgeries, 10 layers of makeup, ready Zara or Forever 21 Costumes with perfectly blow-dried hair. Today what we see on the racks we see in the films. But earlier with Yash Chopra that was not the case, he made sure that the designers designed the outfits, which were simple, yet redefined the beauty of an Indian women. Designers and Stylists like Neeta Lulla, Manish Malhotra helped him translate his ideas well. He actually used to go sourcing with his designers!

I definitely miss those Yashji’s movies, which were relatable and definitely gave attention to detailing. He surely was a king of Romance.

Love,

Cine Closet.
